Wood as a natural material is popular in furniture manufacture and has proven itself for centuries. It's warm and cozy charisma has character. However, wood suffers from years and use. Quickly scratches, the grain fades, or a dirt film dims the look of a wooden furniture piece. If water stains or edges of other liquids have immortalized on your furniture, you can put this on your back: with furniture polish.

Furniture polish not suitable for all wood furniture

As a rule, furniture polish is used only for wood furniture, which has a varnishing or a real wood veneer. Depending on the manufacturer, a furniture polish often only acts on the surface of the wood and hardly penetrates into the depth. Particularly high-quality polishes can also be used on untreated wood surfaces which are normally sealed with special wood oils or waxes.

Small drop - great effect

Users are always amazed at the effect a furniture polish can unfold. Although it is used sparingly, it brings back the grain of the wood and leaves unsightly spots almost completely or even completely disappear. The polish causes the surface to receive an antistatic protective film against dust and to a small extent also against liquids and gives it again a neat appearance.

To polish your furniture correctly

Anyone applying a furniture polish should get a polishing cloth or a soft dust cloth. Microfibre cloths are not suitable for the polishing of wooden furniture since they can bind the smallest dust particles and can bring additional scratches into the wood as an abrasive material. Some drops or splashes - depending on the manufacturer's instructions - are applied to the rag, and the furniture is inserted into it. Try to apply the polish in the direction of the wood grain. After this, a few minutes later, you may have applied too much furniture polish with a kitchen towel or a dry and absorbent cloth.

Choose the right furniture polish

First, select the hue of the polish. These are available in colorless or in different color shades from light to very dark, for example for mahogany wood. Adjust the tone of polish to that of wood. Also, you can choose between a matt or a strong gloss. If you have decided, check whether the polish is harmless to health. Many polishes contain a lot of chemicals, which can lead to allergic reactions, especially in children's rooms or a dining table. If possible, silicones should not be included in the polish.

Make furniture polish by yourself

Widespread are tips to make the furniture polish itself. A cheap olive oil with lemon juice or sunflower oil is recommended. However, these household oils have the disadvantage that they gradually become rancid. However, the oils in a furniture polish from the retail trade are always free of resin and acid, which makes them more hygienic and more gentle for the wood. Also, they are somewhat thinner than edible oil and can be applied better.
Furniture policy is a clear feature of the furniture care of the varnished real wood furniture. However, you must carefully choose a suitable product and use it sparingly to avoid messing your furniture with a greasy film or even endangering your health.
